High-touch surfaces are the shortest path contamination takes through a building, and they are the surfaces least helped by overnight cleaning. The main entrance handle in an office of three hundred people is touched hundreds of times before lunch. Whatever happened to it at 5 AM stopped being true within minutes of the doors opening.
This is why high-touch work deserves to be its own scope with its own frequency, rather than a line inside a nightly round. The right question isn’t whether these surfaces are cleaned — it’s how many hands touch them between treatments.
Mapping beats checklists
Generic high-touch checklists get copied between buildings that have nothing in common. They list the obvious surfaces and miss the ones specific to how your space works: the badge reader everyone taps at one particular door, the shared tablet in the meeting room, the handrail on the stair people use because the lift is slow.
We build the map by walking the building and following the traffic. Where do people funnel? Which controls are shared rather than personal? Where do queues form, and what do people lean on while they wait? Two buildings with identical floor plans get different maps, because the way people move through them differs.
You get that map. It turns coverage into something you can check, challenge and extend — rather than a claim on a proposal.
Frequency matched to reality
Once the map exists, each point gets a frequency from its traffic and its risk, not a single site-wide default. The main entrance is not the storage-room door. Reception is not the back-office corridor.
Frequency also moves with the season. When illness in the building rises, the plan rises with it — a fixed schedule through flu season is a schedule that’s wrong for part of the year.
Done properly, or not worth doing
High-touch cleaning inherits every requirement from disinfection: clean before you disinfect, observe the dwell time on the label, and keep colour-coded tools separated by area. A touchpoint sprayed and wiped dry in one motion has been polished, not disinfected — and on the surfaces that matter most, that gap is the whole point of the service.
